Cork City might have a 12-point lead at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division – but Johnny Dunleavy isn’t getting carried away.
The Ballybofey man, who has recovered from injury to lead Cork to a 12-game unbeaten run at the start of the 2017 campaign.
Dunleavy, the Cork captain, missed the 2016 FAI Cup final win over Dundalk at the Aviva Stadium through injury, but has become a central figure at Turner’s Cross again.
“Winning the Cup last year was a big thing last year,” Dunleavy says.
“It showed us that we could win things. Nothing is won at this time of year. We’ve had a good start, nothing more, nothing less.
“We want to be at the top come October. We need to keep the performances going.
“We had no expectations on how we’d start the season. We’ve done well and we’ve been playing well. The strength in depth is the difference. We have players coming in off the bench who’d start with anyone.
“We’re very together as well and the new lads have all settled in well. These lads have all been together for two or three seasons. You notice that when you’re playing. It’s comfortable now because we all know what to expect.”
Dunleavy was back in Donegal last weekend to watch his boyhood club, Ballybofey United, win the Brian McCormick Cup against Rathmullan Celtic in Bonagee.
