Watch: Which Donegal strand has been named Ireland’s top hidden beach?

We’ve been named coolest place on the planet by National Geographic, Ireland’s hidden gem by the Irish Independent, and now to top off an already spectacular list of titles – one of our beaches has been crowned the number one hidden beach in Ireland.

The Irish Independent have named Donegal’s Murder Hole beach as their number one hidden beach in Ireland.

Near Downings on the Rosguill Peninsula, the Murder Hole is one of Donegal’s best kept secrets.

Compiled by Pól Ó Conghaile and Mark McConville, the list includes lesser known, yet breathtaking beaches dotted across our coast, including Trá Bán in Co Kerry and Omey Island in Co Galway.

Speaking of Donegal’s Murder Hole, McConville says “Donegal is crammed with dramatic beaches, but the adventure it takes to get to Murder Hole makes it extra special.

“No roads will get you here. You have to know what you’re looking for, though locals on the Rosguill Peninsula will be happy to point you in the right direction.

“First, there’s the cross-country walk from Melmore. Then the steep incline down its hills and dunes – the price of admission is a dirty backside.

“Do it, and you’ll arrive at your own private beach, kitted out with small caves and stunning cliffs. With a picnic in your backpack, there’s no need to leave until the tide comes in.

“How did it get its grisly name? That just adds to the mystery.”

The spooky name is rumoured to originate from the 1800s, when a young woman fell from one of the cliffs surrounding the beach however other reports say that the name is derived from how dangerous the currents are; and how perilous it is to swim there.

Despite its eerie name, the Murder Hole is one of Donegal’s best hidden gems – and is now officially Ireland’s most spectacular hidden beach!
