A minute’s silence was observed at this afternoon’s AGM of Donegal County Council in memory of those who perished in an overnight fire in London as well as those who were killed in recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.
The London Ambulance says that six people have died and 74 people are being treated in hospital – 18 of them in critical care – after a fire engulfed a 24-storey tower block near Notting Hill in west London at around 1 o’clock this morning.
Councillor Frank McBrearty proposed the minute’s silence, saying that it happened in area he was very familiar with.
“I lived in the area and my two oldest kids were born there,” Councillor McBrearty said.
“I ask that the members hold a minute’s silence and that the new Mayor write to the Mayor of London expressing our sympathy.”
Councillor McBrearty also proposed to include the 22 who were killed in the recent terror attack in Manchester and the eight who died as a result of a terror attack in London.
Outgoing Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Councillor Terence Slowey, included the memory of well-known Donegal businessman Teddy Blaney, in the minute’s silence.
