Johnny Dunleavy has suffered a fresh injury blow and looks set to miss the remainder of the League of Ireland season.
Cork City captain Dunleavy was carried off during Friday’s win over Limerick at Turner’s Cross.
Ballybofey man Dunleavy was just back after missing the bulk of last season. A knee injury sustained last May kept Dunleavy sidelined until he made his comeback against Finn Harps at Finn Park in February.
Now, the 25-year-old defender looks set for another lengthy spell out of action.
“The indications aren’t good, contrary to what we thought after the match,” said Cork manager John Caulfield.
“It’s his knee but it doesn’t look good. It looks like he’s going to be out for quite a while.
“We’re waiting on confirmation of that but it’s a terrible blow for himself. “
Dunleavy has been plagued by various injuries over the year and the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man is now facing yet more arduous rehabilitation.
Caulfield said: “We’re hoping it may not be but the indications are it will be. Even if he’s back at the end of September, start of October, it’s late.
“It’s a desperate blow for himself and us as well. He’s been a great player for us but has had a number of different injuries.
“It’s not a good place for him at the moment.”
