Young shoppers to get special offers in first Reveal the Teen event

Businesses across Letterkenny are going to be treating teenagers to exclusive offers and competitions in the first shopping event of its kind this week.

The Reveal the Teen Shopping Event will be hosted by ShopLK this month to celebrate young shoppers. The week of discounts, competitions and events taking place on June 21-24 is designed to welcome and attract more teenagers to Letterkenny after the saving and spending habits of local teens were revealed.

A growing list of retailers are already promising top discounts and giveaways for young shoppers. Participating stores include Greene’s Shoes, Backstage Restaurant @ Century Complex, Evolve Menswear, Boots, Magees Pharmacy, Jules Hair & Beauty Supplies, Amelia’s Irish Design & Gifts, Moonshine Coffee House & Craft Studio, Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure, Pats Pizza, Kelco Communications, Brian McCormick Sports & Leisure, Berry Layne, Amazonas Outdoor Store and many more! Visit the Shop LK Facebook page for updates.

An Instagram competition will be running throughout the week, and the Shop LK team will be out and about getting photos with their Facebook frame and will giving out prizes to participants.

The initiative is the result of a research project by Reveal the Teen, a team led by Evelyn McGlynn of EvelynMcMarketing.com with two Loreto Convent Transition Year students Joanna McMonagle and Claire McGettigan along with Shannon Thackrah, a third year Digital Marketing student at IT Sligo.

The team carried out research among teens in Donegal looking at teenagers and money, teenagers and social media and teenagers and their recreational time.

The results proved interesting to everyone in business and served to help understand the teenage market better. The main lesson in this report for retailers was the need to educate and encourage teens to shop local with student discounts for second level, not just third, and to promote easy returns policies.

The Reveal the Teen Shopping Event is designed to be full of activities which will capture the spirit of the Reveal the Teen report. An open invitation has been put out to Letterkenny businesses who want to get involved and attract young customers to their stores.

“During the week retailers and outlets are offering discounts and giveaways” explains Toni Forrester, Letterkenny Chamber.

“Some retailers are already on board including Evolve Menswear and Berry Layne, Michael Murphy Sports, Magees Chemist, Jules Salon Supplies, Amazonas, Pats Pizza and Moonshine and by the time the 21st comes around we hope to have even more involved over the next week.

“The current teen market is very important to local businesses and in general they love shopping locally. These are our future consumers and if this initiative helps in any way to encourage them to shop local then it will have been a success.”

“Our thanks for this idea must go to Evelyn McGlynn of Evelyn McMarketing who came up with the whole concept. She is so supportive of TY students and this year’s project was very useful to all of us involved in retail and in retail promotion.”
