Sheep shearing champion Aaron Magee brings the gold back to Donegal

Aaron Magee has brought the gold back to Donegal after competing in the sheep shearing competition at the prestigious Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh.

Raphoe man Aaron took part in the huge event which attracts shearers from across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

He explained to Donegal Daily that his father Mark Magee has been sheep shearing for 25 years, and taught Aaron when he was just 14, 4 years ago.

Against 32 of the world’s top shearers, Aaron battled it out by shearing 3 sheep in the heat and 4 in the semi-final.

In the final, Aaron battled it out and sheared four sheep in four and a half minutes in the junior category while his dad competed in the open category.

Aaron came in first place and is absolutely ecstatic about the result.

Aaron explained that it all comes down to ‘shear’ luck and practice, as you’re judged on speed and cleanliness of the shear.

Living on a sheep farm, Aaron gets plenty of practice before his competitions.

A busy man, Aaron has also recently competed in the All-Ireland Sheep Shearing competition and won that too! Dad Mark has also competed for Ireland in the Six Nations Team.
