Jim McGuinness has begun his work in China with Beijing Sinobo Guoan FC.

The former Donegal manager has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with the club as assistant manager to their new manager, Roger Schmidt.

The Glenties man flew out to Beijing at the weekend and took part in his first training session with the club yesterday having been employed at Celtic since 2012.

Former Bayer Leverkusen manager Schmidt is the new boss at Guoan and a club statement said: “We are convinced that Schmidt will give a new impetus to Beijing Guoan and will lead our team to reach new heights.”

Schmidt and McGuinness took charge of training yesterday after being welcomed to the club.

“I also feel that it’s great timing in terms of taking the next step forward in my own coaching career,” McGuinness said last week.

Their first game this Saturday sees them take on Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande FC at the Workers Stadium.
