Finn Valley trio to fly the flag at European Under-20 Championships

Three Donegal athletes have been selected as part of a 40-strong Irish team that will travel to the European Under-20 Athletics Championships later this month.

The Championships are being held in Grosseto, Italy from July 20-23.

Finn Valley trio Arlene Crossan, Janine Boyle and Shane Irwin will fly the flag.

Cross – pictured by Kieran Carlin – goes in both the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay, with Boyle in the 100m and the 4x100m while Irwin is selected for the 4x400m relay.

The selection means a proud moment for Finn Valley AC coach Shauna Carlin – who is coach to all three athletes.

Crossan has hit form at just the right time. On Saturday, she won the Irish Junior 400m hurdles in Tullamore, in a time of 1:01:08. Crossan will move to the University of New Mexico later in the year, but will fancy p.b territory in Italy first.

On Saturday, Boyle took the bronze in the Junior 100m while Irwin was the silver medalist in the Junior 400m.

There was no place for Lifford-Strabane AC’s Brendan O’Donnell, who has been suffering from a wrist injury of late, but who still won the hammer at the weekend in Tullamore.
