Top Donegal GAA stars to pass their skills on to youngsters

Two of Donegal’s biggest stars of ladies football are set to host a summer camp – to pass on their skills to the next generation.

Aoife McDonnell and Yvonne McMonagle were part of the side which landed a second Ulster title in three years for the county last weekend.

The duo will be joined by other stars of the team during the week-long camp which takes place at the end of the month.

Beginning on Monday July 24 at Glenties Comprehensive School, the five day programme is aimed at girls aged from 12 to 16, with groups divided into different age groups.

“Yvonne and I are really looking forward to the camp,” said Naomh Conaill star Aoife.

“We will look at everything from tackling to scoring as well as things like nutrition.

“We are hoping we can get girls from clubs across the county and that perhaps parents can car share to make it easier for those young girls who live that bit further away from Glenties.

“We’ll start each day at 10am and finish at 2pm with a properly constructed programme throughout the week.”

Aoife says the growing number of young girls taking up ladies gaelic is positive
for the future of the county.

“There’s a great deal of work going on at the clubs,” she said.

“This camp is about learning new skills and honing old ones, making players better.

“We are hoping that after a week at the camp, all the girls will go back to their clubs as better players and among them will be future senior county stars.”
Sharp-shooter Yvonne is also looking forward to the week.

“It’s a really good programme and will be good for players at all levels,” said Yvonne.

“We are hoping for a good turn-out and we are confident we will see future county stars during the week.”

Places are limited so anyone interested needs to register asap by email to atlanticwayexperience@gmail.com.

The camp costs just €50 for the week to help cover costs.
