Bonagee United have presented their senior ladies captain, Leona Russell, with sponsorship ahead of the Letterkenny woman’s trip to Australia to represent Ireland in the AFL International Cup.

On Sunday-week, the Irish team fly out for a three-week trip to Melbourne to take part in the tournament.

Russell is one of six Donegal players included in the Irish panel.

Gweedore’s Aisling Gillespie, Roisin McFadden, Carolann Cassidy, Fiona Roarty and Rachel McGee will also be on board for the long flight Down Under.

Russell was presented with sponsorship by Bonagee United Chairman Donal Coyle, while team-mates, committee members and management joined in wishing the all-rounder good luck in the trip.

Russell is a key member of Louise Gordon’s Bonagee senior squad, who will next week face Hardwicke FC in Dublin in the WFAI Intermediate Shield quarter-final.

“Everyone at Bonagee would like to wish Leona all the best in her trip to Australia,” Bonagee United Chairman Donal Coyle said.

“Leona is a popular member of the club and a solid player for the Bonagee ladies team. We would like to send our good wishes to Leona and we have no doubt she will represent the club well on her travels.

“Hopefully she will be back in the Bonagee colours when she returns for the run-in of the North West Women’s Super League and, fingers crossed, the latter stages of the WFAI competition too.”

All the Donegal players line out at club level for the Ulster Kookaburras.

The AFL International Cup takes place in Melbourne from August 5-19 next and the Donegal woman came through collective and individual training since the AFL European Championships.

At those Championships, the Banshees reached the final where they only lost to the GB Swans 1-2 (8) to 0-2 (2).
