RED HUGH’S PUT on a decent show this afternoon to see off Moville’s challenge in Group A of the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure Junior A Football Championship in Killygordon – although two own goals helped.

Red Hugh’s 4-12 Moville 0-9

Both teams had won the opening games in the competition with Red Hugh’s overcoming neighbours Robert Emmets on a 1-18 to 1-12 as Moville defeated Muff 5-12 to 2-12.

Those types of scoreline showed how open things can be at this level and this afternoon’s fixture in the sunshine showed some good football, although Red Hugh’s were deserving winners.

They used the slight wind at their backs well in the first half and went in 1-10 to 0-6 in front and then proved their abilities to run the ball after the break to add another three goals.

From the four goals, two were own goals with Moville goalkeeper Malachy McDermott and full-back Eunan Hegarty the unfortunate parties – although James Gallen and Calvin Bradley also netted to show Red Hugh’s supremacy.

It was 0-2 apiece just after the 10-minute mark when Johnny Carlin centred and Hegarty deflected the ball past McDermott.

Points continued to flow with Bradley in impressive form and Damien Browne and Ricky Gallen also on the mark, hitting four apiece in the first half. At the other end Moville’s half-time total came courtesy of Seamus Hegarty, Michael Barry with three and Danny Murphy adding two.

In the second half, there was no score till seven minutes in when Red Hugh’s worked a splendid second goal.Johnny  Carlin went on a strong run from midfield and Bradley and Peadar McGlinchey before James Carlin netted.

Moville saw their chances slip further when, at 2-10 to 0-7 down, Murphy was dismissed for a second yellow card, although a goal from Barry on 48 minutes did at least keep them in the game and Ciaran Diver popped over a couple of very well-taken scores.

However, Red Hugh’s reaffirmed their authority with a third goal six minutes from time when Calvin Bradley was on hand to finish off a pass from Johnny Carlin. Then, in the last minute, McDermott, who was keeping goal for Moville, knew his luck was out when the ball rebounded into the net after Damien Browne’s effort at a point cannoned back off the post.
