Letterkenny AC’s Ciaran Doherty has won a gold medal at the European Masters Athletics Championships.

Doherty, a fisherman from Cruit Island, won gold in the 3,000m steeplechase M40 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Doherty led the way in 9 minutes and 34.6 seconds.

Great Britain’s Sullivan Smith was second in 9:35.09 with Paul Waroquier of France in third.

Doherty, who only took up athletics seriously in 2008, won a World Masters Indoor title in 2012 in Finland and European bronze the same year.

In 2015, Doherty won a silver medal at the World Masters Championships in France.
