Ballybofey is to get a new bridge.
The Director of services at Donegal County Council, John McLaughlin has confirmed work has been done on a design and planning a replacement Logue’s bridge Glenfin Road, Ballybofey.
The move has been welcomed by Cllr Patrick McGowan.
The current bridge has both a weight restriction and height restriction barriers preventing lorries, vans and agricultural vehicles using relief road.
Cllr McGowan says he has made frequent representation to Donegal County Council in an effort to get a new two-way bridge erected at this location.
“This crossing acted as a mini bypass of Ballybofey Stranorlar as well as catering for local residents and businesses and has added to the already serious congestion in both towns since the restrictions have been imposed which were necessary owing to the deteriorating condition of the existing bridge,” said Cllr McGowan .
In the past, the Council prioritised the worst bridges in the County and sent a priority bridge list to the Department for funding but now the Government and Dept select the bridges with no input from Council engineers .
Cllr McGowan added the process now is to get a new bridge route agreed and a design carried out now in October before forwarding to Government and the Dept of Transport and begin lobbying for funding to go to tender stage.
