Injury forces Boyce out of World Championships

Brendan Boyce has been forced to withdraw from the men’s 50k walk at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London.

The Milford man suffered a grade 1 hamstring tear in training during the week.

Boyce, who switched singlet to that of Finn Valley AC this year, has withdrawn from tomorrow’s race in London.

Earlier this year, Boyce finished a brilliant fourth and just outside the medals at the European Race Walking Cup in Podebrady, Czech Republic.

Boyce had been in fine fettle, but has had to pull out of the competition.

“It’s devastating, after a year’s training with this race the absolute focus,” Irish Athletics team manager Patsy McGonagle told Donegal Daily.

“He had targeted a top 8 world finish in the best shape of his life.

“The decision was just made in the last few minutes to withdraw on medical advice with Brendan’s agreement.

“It was a tough tough decision but a sensible one in my opinion.”
