Gweedore duo among the goals as Banshees reach AFL International Cup semi-final

Gweedore duo Aisling Gillespie and Rachel McGee scored two of the goals as the Irish Banshees moved a step closer to a place in the Grand Final at the AFL International Cup in Melbourne.

A 60-3 win over Papua New Guinea on Sunday in Hallam saw the Banshees take top spot in group B having won all three of their games.

Six Donegal players are in the Banshees squad that now faces Great Britain in a semi-final at Royal Park on Tuesday.

A place in Saturday’s Grand Final at the Etihad is now a very real target for them.

Gillespie and McGee are joined in the panel by Gweedore’s Roisin McFadden, Carolann Cassidy and Fiona Roarty, as well as Letterkenny’s Leona Russell.

Former LyIT student Aine Higgins is also on the Banshees squad.

The Banshees won their opening two games in style, defeating USA Freedom by 38 points and then hammering the European Crusaders 61-0.

And on Sunday, they put Papua New Guinea to bed.

Ireland led by 27 points at half-time and Gillespie and McGee scored in the third quarter as the Irish women cruised to a win.
