Watch: Milford pride as Amber Barrett named joint captain of Irish squad

Milford woman Amber Barrett has been named as joint captain of the Ireland squad for the 2017 World University Games in Taipei.

Barrett, who is joined on the Ireland squad by Greencastle woman Niamh McLaughlin, who is at Northumbria University.

Barrett is a student at Maynooth University and plays in the Women’s National League with Peamount United.

UCD’s Claire Walsh is joint captain with Barrett.

“It’s a huge honour. I’m delighted,” Barrett said.

“I was a little bit surprised. Hopefully we’ll be able to lead the team through the Championships.”

Ireland begin their Games on Friday with a game against Mexico at Hsinchu County Second Stadium before taking on Canada on Sunday at Fu Jen Catholic University Stadium.

Barrett said: “We’re confident. Every girl in the squad has played international at some stage growing up. We have huge experience behind us.”
