Stunning win by Magees sees Raphoe duo into last 16 at World Championships

Chloe and Sam Magee are into the last 16 of the BWF World Championships in Glasgow after a sensational win this afternoon.

The Raphoe brother and sister defeated Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino after three rip-roaring games at the Emirates Arena.

The Magees turned in a stunning display to win 21-13, 16-21, 21-15.

The Japanese pair are 22nd in the world rankings and were one of the seeded pairings in Scotland – but the Donegal duo were on song.

In the deciding final frame of the 55-minute game, the Magees registered nine points in a row to seal a famous win.

This year, already, the Magees won a bronze medal at the European Championships, defeating Polish pair Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba in Denmark, before missing out in the semi-final against Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen.

In their last 16 clash, they will face either Min Hao Tseng and Ling Fang Hu from Taiwan or, more likely, the world number 3 pair of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia.
