Tyrone man who drove at ‘disgraceful’ speed fined in Letterkenny Court

September 7, 2017

A man detected driving at what a speed described a Judge as being ‘extraordinary’ and ’disgraceful’ has been fined.

23-year-old self-employed Eoin Cassidy was clocked driving at 179km/h in a 100km zone on August 19, 2017.

Garda Finn was operating a speed check at Dromore, Letterkenny, at 23.45 on the night in question when he detected a red BMW X5 driving at excessive speed.

Gardai pursued and stopped the vehicle, being driven by Cassidy, of 140 Edergole Road, Fintona, County Tyrone.

Solicitor for Cassidy, Mr Frank Dorrian, said his client, ‘a very industrious young man’, was ‘to some degree astonished’ by the reading.

“He understands the peril that he has placed himself in,” Mr Dorrian told Letterkenny District Court.

“He was genuinely surprised that it had occurred. He didn’t realise he was traveling at that speed. He got two thirds of the way down and stopped comfortably within the distance of the remainder of the dual carriageway. He was exceptionally co-operative.”

The charge was reduced to one of careless driving.

“It was an extraordinary speed….the speed was disgraceful,” Judge Paul Kelly said.

Cassidy was fined €500.
