Men who allegedly robbed pensioner in supermarket refused bail

Two men have appeared in court charged with the alleged theft from a pensioner in a Co Sligo supermarket.

The two Romanian men, who only arrived in Ireland two weeks ago, allegedly targeted the woman at Murphy’s Supermarket at Teeling Street on September 26th last.

The two men, Gheorhe Nutica, aged 42, and Anton Mustafa, aged 23, appeared in handcuffs at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal.

The court was told that the men had been arrested at an address in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo.

They are charged with allegedly stealing a purse containing an undisclosed amount of cash as well as a set of keys under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Garda Inspector Sean Grant told the court that Gardai were objecting to bail in the case.

Garda Michael Cunningham of Tubberycurry Garda station told the court that he believed the men were a flight risk as they had only been in the country for two weeks.

He told the court “The case involves a case involves the alleged theft of a purse from a very vulnerable member of society.”

When arrested at an address in Barackaboy, Ballyhaunis, the men did not have any tenancy agreements for the property.

Solicitor for the pair, Mr Patsy Gallagher said his clients were innocent until proven guilty and that they were currently looking for work here.

Judge Paul Kelly said he was refusing bail in the case.

He adjourned the case to allow the men to appear before Sligo District Court on Thursday, October 12th.
