A Letterkenny student who took to dealing drugs while completing a computer course at the LYIT has appeared at Letterkenny District Court.
Oisin Keeney was caught by Gardai after they raided a property at Port Road on January 9th last.
Garda Inspector Sean Grant told the court that when officers raided the house, they found Keeney with a large jar of herbal cannabis worth more than €250.
Inspector Grant said Gardai had acted on information that the premises was being used for the sale and supply of cannabis in the Letterkenny area.
Keeney, who had no previous convictions, declined to answer any questions.
His solicitor told the court that this was not a professional operation but that Keeney was instead selling to friends.
He said his client had built up a considerable credit card debt of up to €1,500 while in the LYIT undertaking a course in Computer Security and Digital Forensics.
He added that his client still owed the LYIT fees and will not be allowed to graduate until he does so.
His solicitor added “He then moved back in with his family and had has gotten a lot of support and is very apologetic for what happened. He said there will not be a repeat of this behaviour.”
He is now a bar manager in a bar/restaurant in Dublin.
Judge Paul Kelly said he will ask the Probation Services to look at Keeney’s case and asked his solicitor to impress upon him the seriousness of the drug dealing charge.
