Winds, rain and risk of floods as ‘weather bomb’ to hit Ireland this weekend

An “explosive” weather bomb is set to batter Ireland this weekend bringing up to 130kmh winds, rain and a risk of flooding.

The system, already informally known as Storm Brian, will hammer the entire coast at the weekend.

Ireland is on a storm alert with a dip in low pressure causing perfect conditions for another massive storm – days after three people were killed in Hurricane Ophelia.

The weather system is called a weather bomb because the central pressure of the low pressure is falling 35mb (millibars) in 24 hours – higher than one an hour.

These are known by scientists as explosive cyclogenesis.

Fears of Storm Brian increase as Met Eireann issue weather warnings for Ireland over torrential rain and dangerous gusts

This alert comes into force at 6pm on Friday and remains in place until midnight on Saturday.
