Families encouraged to speak Irish to children as new campaign launched

written by Elaine McCallig November 4, 2017

Government Chief Whip and Minister of State for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Joe McHugh T.D., has announced that his Department is implementing a specific measure in Gaeltacht areas in order to raise awareness among young families in the Gaeltacht of the advantages of raising children with Irish.

The aim of this measure is to reinforce the Irish language as the household and community language in the Gaeltacht, consistent with the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language.

As part of the campaign, materials such as posters and pamphlets will be circulated to health centres and doctors’ surgeries across the Gaeltacht in order to highlight the matter as well as the language support package provided by the Department to young Gaeltacht families raising children with Irish or those who wish to do so.

Information on the current campaign will also be disseminated among preschool services in Gaeltacht areas.

Under the initiative, a package of books, DVDs and other relevant material is provided, free of charge, to families who contact the Department. Since its introduction in 2012 5,798 packages have been supplied to young families.

“This is an excellent opportunity to highlight the advantages of having Irish, and to tell people that support is available to them from my Department if they choose to raise their children with Irish,” said Minister of State McHugh as he announced the information campaign.

“From feedback we received from the community it is clear that such a measure is needed. Young Gaeltacht parents have direct and regular contact with doctors’ clinics and health centres in the Gaeltacht and this is a wonderful opportunity to make them aware of the options they have regarding their household language.”

As Gaeilge

Tá fógartha ag Príomh-Aoire an Rialtais agus Aire Stáit don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hOileáin, Joe McHugh T.D., (3 Samhain) go bhfuil a Roinn chun beart faoi leith a chur sa tsiúl sna ceantair Ghaeltachta ar mhaithe leis na buntáistí a bhaineann le clann a thógáil le Gaeilge a chur ar a súile do theaghlaigh óga na Gaeltachta.

Tá sé mar aidhm ag an mbeart seo an Ghaeilge a threisiú mar theanga teaghlaigh agus pobail sa Ghaeltacht i gcomhréir leis an Straitéis 20 Bliain don Ghaeilge.

Mar chuid den fheachtas, scaipfear ábhar eolais amhail póstaeir agus leatháin in ionaid sláinte agus dochtúra fud fad na Gaeltachta ar mhaithe le haird a dhíriú ar an ábhar agus ar an bpacáiste tacaíochta teanga atá á chur ar fáil ag an Roinn do theaghlaigh óga na Gaeltachta atá ag tógáil clainne le Gaeilge nó a dteastaíonn uathu é sin a dhéanamh.

Scaipfear eolas chomh maith faoin bhfeachtas reatha ar na seirbhísí réamhscolaíochta sa Ghaeltacht.

Faoin tionscnamh scaiptear beart leabhar, DVDanna agus ábhar oiriúnach eile, saor in aisce, ar theaghlaigh a chuireann fios air ón Roinn. Ó cuireadh tús leis in 2012 tá 5798 pacáiste scaipthe ar theaghlaigh óga.

“Deis ar dóigh í seo chun na buntáistí a bhaineann leis an Ghaeilge a chur ar a súile do dhaoine, agus chun a rá leo go bhfuil tacaíocht ar fáil dóibh ó mo Roinnse má roghnaíonn siad a gclann a thógáil le Gaeilge,” a dúirt an tAire Stáit McHugh agus é ag fógairt an fheachtais eolais.

“Léirigh aiseolas a fuarthas ón phobal go bhfuil gá le beart mar seo. Bíonn teagmháil dhíreach agus rialta ag tuismitheoirí óga na Gaeltachta leis na hionad dochtúra agus sláinte sa Ghaeltacht agus is deis ar dóigh í seo chun na roghanna atá acu maidir le teanga teaghlaigh a chur ar a súile dóibh”.
