Fishermen’s frustration as thieves target them for a second time, ripping €3000 engine from boat

Fishermen have been left frustrated after their €3,100 engine was ripped from their boat in Bruckless.

This is the second time in three months that a Honda 15 Outboard engine, worth over €3,000, has been stolen from the men at Darney Pier. The engine had been stolen between Friday night and the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ciaran Ellison and his father Danny fish together using the same boat and were shocked to discover the second engine had been taken when they went to the pier yesterday morning.

The first engine was never recovered despite efforts by local Gardaí.

“The engine was bolted tight to the boat and the bolts were taken off and also ripped off the boat,” Ciaran told Donegal Daily.

Ciaran believes that the engines may have been taken by someone with local knowledge, as many from outside the area would not know how to get to the pier otherwise.

The thieves have not only taken an engine – it has also impacted their livelihoods as the men will not be able to work until they replace the engine.

If you spotted anything suspicious in Bruckless on Friday night, or if you spot a Honda 15 Outboard engine for sale under suspicious circumstances then please do not hesitate to contact Killybegs Gardaí on 074 97 31002.

You can also contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
