Tony McNamee says the Ulster Senior League are going to the FAI Intermediate Inter-League Tournament to win the Michael Ward Trophy this weekend.

The Fanad United attacker will compete for the first time at the tournament in Galway.

Last year, he was still on Finn Harps’ books before he returned to his native Swilly Rovers. This summer, McNamee made the move to Fanad and is part of a 20-man panel that carries the USL hopes into the weekend.

“We have good experience with a few players dropping down from senior football. It’s a very strong squad,” McNamee said.

“We’re not going to compete – we’re going to win it. Hopefully we can go on and achieve what they did a couple of years ago.

“There are always players in the USL capable of playing at a higher level. Hopefully they can show that at the weekend.”

McNamee has been impressed by the standard of the USL since returning to the intermediate grade.

He said: “There is nothing wrong with the standard in the League. It’s not that the standard has dropped. There are a few teams in the county who are maybe afraid of coming up to it.”
