Donegal Mountain Rescue has shared a list of things to double-check before going walking on the hills this winter.
On Friday Donegal Mountain Rescue was called to assist walkers in need of assistance on Mount Errigal in the midst of a Status Yellow ice-snow warning from Met Éireann. The walkers were located safe and well by the crew.
The rescue crew is reminding people to ensure you have plenty of supplies before embarking on a trip, and to let people know where you are and what time to expect you to return by.
First they say you should plan ahead, and be aware of the weather conditions. People should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring plenty of food and water.
“Have a compass and map – know how to use them. Have a head torch and flashlight, especially during the winter months,” a spokesperson for Donegal Mountain Rescue says.
“A mobile device is not a flashlight, compass, and get out of jail card!
“Share your route with friends and family, let your accommodation provider know your planned routes and your estimated time of arrival back to accommodation.
“If you’re enjoying a pint or two afterwards, also let them know you’ll be home later than planned.
“Leave your contact details and planned return date and time on your windscreen.
“Have fun, enjoy the hills this winter season and be safe.”
