Fifty sports groups to benefit from funding to get older people active in communities

FIFTY local sports groups will receive a total of €13,000 in funding to help older people get more active in our communities.

Groups benefitting in Donegal this year are spread right across the county and include a wide variety of activities and sports.

Minister Joe McHugh said: “The aim of the grants is to improve the health and wellbeing of older people across Donegal by providing them with opportunities to engage in physical activity and sport.

“I am delighted so many local groups will benefit from this tranche of funding from swim clubs in Milford to activity groups in towns like Dunfanaghy and Castlefinn. Groups receiving funding across the country include activities ranging from tennis to rowing, Tai Chi to salsa dancing and yoga to archery.

“The National Grant Scheme funding has supported and empowered thousands of groups of older people for many years to get more active more often and the record number of applications this year shows the continued importance of the scheme for groups throughout the country.

“Programmes like Go for Life, funded by Sport Ireland, will help us reach the targets set out in the National Physical Activity Plan and approximately 30,000 people nationwide will take part in the activities funded by the grants.

“I am delighted we have such a great selection of activities here in Donegal which incorporate excellent social opportunities with getting active.

“The success of this scheme shows what can be achieved with a small investment and the importance of funding sport and physical activity, at any age.”

The Grant Scheme is part of Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life programme, funded by Sport Ireland and delivered nationally with the support of Local Sports Partnerships and the HSE.
