Hidden gem of Donegal named among the world’s Top 10 Places to Love in 2018

Donegal’s year as the Coolest Place on the planet is coming to an end, but the tourism buzz won’t be ending anytime soon it seems!

Our much-publicised Coolest Place title from National Geographic Traveller has drawn adventure seekers to the county throughout 2017. Visitors are discovering more and more of Donegal’s hidden gems, and one more gem is getting worldwide attention this Christmas.

The December/January issue of Cara Magazine has listed Gweedore in Donegal as one of the Top 10 Places to Love in 2018.

The Gaeltacht town sits at the number 5 spot of secret destinations to visit in the New Year and is counted among popular regions in the USA and Europe.

The Cara Magazine by Aer Lingus is flown all over the world and read by a huge range of international travellers. People flying home for Christmas have been delighted to see a familiar place in the top travel publication.

Ventura, USA takes the number one spot of Places to Love in 2018, followed by Bergamo in Italy, Lubeck in Germany, Tavira in Portugal and then our very own Gweedore.

Writer Melanie Mullen tells readers to escape to Gweedore at the base of ‘awesome’ Errigal on the Wild Atlantic Way:

“Raw and wild, Co. Donegal boasts some of the most unspoiled landscapes in Ireland, from rugged coastline to the barely touched countryside,” the article says.

The recommendation references the West Donegal Gaeltacht’s best-known assets: “Blow away the cobwebs with a hike around the hugely atmospheric Poison Glen and be sure to join a weekend trad sing-song session at Leo’s Tavern in Meenaleck village, where the likes of local heroes Enya, Clannad and Moya Brennan cut their teeth.”

If you’re flying this December and January, make sure to check out the story on page 75 of the magazine.
