The chairman of Inishowen Municipal District says last night should serve as a serious warning of the continued vulnerability of Inishowen’s towns and villages to flooding.
Cathaoirleach Jack Murray said Minister Moran and the OPW must act now to protect the residents of the Peninsula.
Cllr Murray said “With the serious threat of flooding across Inishowen last night, we can be thankful only that the Spring tide helped the water subside just in time and that the fire brigade was able to pump water away in places like Burnfoot – otherwise we could be dealing with scenes of destruction on a similar level to the August floods.”
He said this is of little consolation to those whose property was damaged last night though.
He added “Last night should serve as a serious warning about the continued vulnerability of Inishowen’s towns and villages to flooding.
“Four months on, flood defences still have not been built in Burnfoot or Buncrana. Many rivers are still full of debris and are more dangerous than they were in August.
“Inishowen can’t wait any longer. Minister Moran and the OPW have to act ASAP. These works have to be done.”
