Last weekend marked the beginning of the indoor season for Finn Valley athletes at home and also in France and the US.

The McGuigan brothers Dempsey and Fellan were at different venues at Collegiate meets in the US, throwing the heavy hammer.

Dempsey, with an eye on the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April, was in action with the 16lb ball and reached out to over 20m.

He was in action at the Vanderbilt meet in Nashville and his throw wasn’t far away from his pb and Donegal best, moving to 17th in the collegiate rankings in the US.

Fellas was out over 15m in his attempt.

Shane Irwin had an encouraging opener of 49.1 over 400m in Nantes, an indoor pb. With improvement he may shake a medal at the national under-23 championships.

A small number of underage athletes were at Athlone for the national combined championships with Joseph Gillespie in the medals, and a 1.51m high jump, important to the overall points total.
