Listen: Niamh Hegarty enjoying new forward role with Donegal ladies

Niamh Hegarty had a new role with the Donegal ladies on Sunday – but took to it like a duck to water.

Hegarty, stationed at full-forward, scored two goals as Donegal romped to a 9-17 to 1-5 win over Westmeath in Derrylin.

“I was happy enough with the performance,” Moville’s Hegarty said.

“I got a load of space. Yvonne (Bonner) was roaming in and out. She has great speed and you just can’t stop her.”

The win marked Donegal’s first League success of the year and Hegarty believes they finally did themselves justice.

She said: “That’s the first game the forwards got through and we took the goals well.

“We had a point to prove. We really wanted to get a win and we’re delighted to get it. We didn’t perform in the last 15 minutes against Galway or against Dublin.

“We have 30 good players there and it really brings us on in training.”
