Gardai are continuing to investigate the death of a retired schoolteacher in a housefire in Inishowen.

Gerry McCabe, who was in his 70s, died following a small fire at his home at Iskaeen near Muff.

The father-of-four died following the fire during the freezing cold snap last weekend.

The fire, believed to have been caused by a gas-heater, was confined to the late Mr McCabe’s house.

The dead man’s body was found at his home on Saturday morning last after neighbours told Gardai they could not gain entry to the property.

Mr McCabe, a former teacher at Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana, lived alone.

Neighbours described him as “a very intelligent man, with a great sense of humour.”

Garda Superintendent Eugene McGovern said Gardai are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire after the dead man’s body was found on the floor of the kitchen.
