Traffic lights a ‘short-sighted’ solution to traffic issue at new Letterkenny road

A Letterkenny-based Councillor says that the new Joe Bonnar Road could add to the town’s already-congested traffic issues.

Councillor Dessie Shiels says the new road, which will join the Port Road with the Neil T Blaney Road, that a roundabout should be constructed.

“The Council should consider the proper layout and road markings of this section of the Neil T Blaney Road leading to the Polestar Roundabout in order that traffic tailbacks can be better health with and traffic movements improved,” Councillor Shiels said.

The Council has confirmed that traffic lights will be installed at the junction of the Neil T Blaney Road/Joe Bonnar Road to regulate traffic movements.

“The Polestar Roundabout is above capacity at present and any solution to this will be outside the remit of the Joe Bonnar Project,” the Council said.

“The Council is currently reviewing options with respect to improving the junction layout at Polestar Roundabout and solutions shall be disced once same are sufficiently developed.”

Councillor Shiels said that a roundabout was the only solution to the issue at the Neil T Blaney Road/Joe Bonnar Road junction and that traffic lights were a ‘short-sighted’ solution.
