Letterkenny 24/7 Triathlon Club hosted their second race of the season on Sunday and it was a sell-out race.

Letterkenny 24/7 Triathlon Club had 14 members compete in the Try a Tri event and 19 compete in the Super Sprint event- superb numbers once again.

What must also be highlighted is the huge numbers of members who volunteered in any way to help with the event- it was brilliant to see so many smiling cheerful marshals and the feedback we have been receiving since Sunday shows how much this meant to competitors.

Sunday’s Try a Tri and Super Sprint events showed exactly why they are the talk of the town this week!

A race for everyone, the Try a Tri for those that wish to dip their toes into the triathlon world or simply to challenge themselves and the Super Sprint, a little longer so perfect for anyone who has already had some experience. Indeed on Sunday we had first timers taking on both events.

Anna Hennessey, recently crowned European swim champion, was chosen to start the claxon for the first wave of swimmers who took to the waters at the Aura Leisure Centre. Conditions were perfect for the swim , cycle and run event. Competitors were of all ages, from 17- 76, came from far and wide and from all levels of fitness showing just how achievable this great event is.

Allister Doherty was the winner of the Try a  Tri event in an excellent time of 38:21. Paddy McGee, 24/7 member, was in second place in 39:34 with Neil McBride third in 40:15.

Jeanette Maguire was first Female with a superb time of 44:01, Jeanette had the fastest swim split of the Try a Tri, Deborah McMahon was second in 46:47 and Labhaoise Boyle finished in third place in a time of 48:05.

James Keenan was our Super Sprint winner in a time of 39:07, hot on his tail in second place with just 19 seconds between them was Clifford Rodgers who finished in 39:26. Junior 24/7 member Ben Carr had a brilliant race, finishing with the fastest run split of the day, crossing the line third overall in a time of 41:23 – definitely one to watch!

24/7 ladies always deliver – Niamh McDaid was the Super Sprint winner in a time of 47:06 with Fionnuala Larkin in second place in 49:25- both had fantastic races! Third female in the Super Sprint went to Sinead O’Brien – her first triathlon-she finished in an excellent time of 50:09.

There were excellent performances from all 24/7 members on the day, too many to mention, full list of results below. Special mention must be made to all who took on their first Triathlon-we look forward to seeing you all compete in many more this season and beyond!

24/7 wish to thank Sunday’s main sponsor Aura Leisure Centre and all our race partners for their continued sponsorship and support and to thank St.Eunan’s GAA Club for the use of their facilities. Without your help these races cannot be run-thank you!
