The icon of the Holy Family was welcomed to St. Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny as part of its journey around Ireland ahead of the World Meeting of Families 2018.

The bishop of Raphoe, Bishop Alan Mc Guicken, along with Father Kevin Gillespie and Father Kemmy and Father Kelly welcomed the icon to the Cathedral on Thursday .

An evening of song and prayer followed as part of the World Meeting of Families 2018.

This specially-commissioned icon will be in the Cathedral from now until Monday morning after 10am mass. An all night vigil will take place on Friday night following the Mass of Colmcille at 7.30pm, lasting until Saturday morning.

It is believed that Pope Francis may fly into Knock Airport and visit the Knock Shrine in Co. Mayo at the beginning of his Irish visit. He is due to attend the World Meeting of Families in Croke Park, Dublin, on August 25.

A Papal Mass will be held in Phoenix Park at 3pm on the afternoon of Sunday August 26th. An estimated 65,000 people are expected to attend the mass.
