Gweedore grandad goes on wild 2,500km cycle for Bumbleance

Keen cyclist Hughie Gallagher has been inspired to take on an incredible 2,500km challenge this week around the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Gweedore man was so touched by the story of a local tot who flew to hospital with BUMBLEair that he wanted to do something himself for the BUMBLEance charity transport service.

Three year old Oisin Campbell from Derrybeg recently flew by helicopter to an appointment at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Dublin. The short journey in the arms of his mother, Fionnuala Ni Dhochartaigh, was so much more comfortable than a car journey for little Oisin, who has a rare chromosomal abnormality.

The family’s story prompted Hughie to use his passion for endurance cycling to raise funds for more BUMBLEance and BUMBLEair journeys.

Hughie is already going strong in his journey from South to North, having already conquered Cork, Kerry and Clare. He last checked in from Co. Galway and has been gathering up great speed and great support from locals and online donators.

Hughie’s wife Breid is following him on the journey, while their children and grandchildren are all backing him on this fast-paced cycle, which began on July 1st. He will cover the rest of Ireland’s western coastline in the coming days, before finishing in Derry City.

Hughie has plenty of experience in such endurance challenges for great causes. His adventures include cycling cross-country, from Malin to Mizen and on a three-peak challenge.

He once cycled non-stop for 24 hours on a training bike for a young local girl Mary Ní Ghallachóir who was raising money for Temple Street Children’s Hospital and St. Raphael’s Paediatric Ward in Beaumount Hospital.

Kind-hearted donors have been giving Hughie a great boost on this latest challenge. He has already collected over €2,400, and there are many miles to go.
