Michael Deeney has been confirmed as the new manager of Donegal League Premier Division side Rathmullan Celtic.

Deeney takes over at Flagpole Park from Dara Patton, who stepped down at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Rathmullan finished third from bottom in the Premier Division last season and overcame Bonagee United in a relegation-promotion play-off at The Moss to stay in the top flight.

Deeney previously managed Fanad United in the Ulster Senior League having been assistant manager to Jason Gibson at Swilly Rovers.

Deeney, who played for Greenock Morton in Scotland, more recently managed Milford United, and has made his return to management with Rathmullan.

“The Hoops committee met with Michael this week and were impressed with his knowledge, ambition and desire to take the Flagpole hotseat,” Rathmullan confirmed on the club’s Facebook page.

“We firmly believe that he is the right man to take the club forward, continuing the excellent levels of professionalism set by his most recent predecessors in the dugout.

“From talking with him, it is clear that he’s kept a close eye on the club over a long period of time, something we are sure will be an asset now that he’s on board.”

Deeney’s tenure will begin on August 26 at home to Milford United.
