Donegal man (19) is jailed for rape as young victim waives anonymity

July 24, 2018

A 19-year-old Donegal man has been sentenced to jail for the oral rape of a teenage girl in Fanad.

Bailey Laughlin, of Ballylin, Ramelton, was sentenced to five years in prison with the final three years suspended for the oral rape of a then 16-year-old woman, the Irish Times reports.

The Central Criminal Court heard that Laughlin, who was aged 17 at the time, was observed drinking quite heavily at a birthday party in Fanad on May 1, 2016.

He left the building after becoming upset, and the young woman followed him into a car park to see if he was okay.

It was there that Laughlin pulled the young woman towards him and started kissing her. He put her hand on his penis and pushed her down and forced her to have oral sex. The young woman said she was crying and told Laughlin she didn’t want to do it. She said she managed to stand up and he spat in her face.

The young woman had known Laughlin for about one year and they had kissed once, the court heard. She had previously received Snapchat messages of an unwanted nature from Laughlin which she had not responded to.

After the assault, the young woman and Laughlin travelled back from the party in the same bus. The bus driver contacted gardaí after detecting that something was wrong.

Mr Justice White commended the young woman, saying she was an impressive young lady who had been acting as a ‘good Samaritan’ on the night.

The young woman has waived her right to anonymity so that Laughlin can be identified.
