“I just didn’t have the gears” – Mark English eliminated despite season’s best run

A season’s best effort wasn’t enough to put Mark English through to the semi-finals of the 800m at the 2018 European Athletics Championships.

English finished eighth in his heat in a time of 1:48.98.

Although it was the Letterkenny man’s best effort of the season, he missed out on qualification.

The UCD AC athlete was a bronze medalist at these Championships four years ago, but has suffered from injury in the Berlin build-up.

English pulled up in the closing passage of the 800m at the Morton Games, but did bounce back to win his sixth Irish 800m time.

“I just didn’t have the gears today,” English reflected.

“I struggled to get into a rhythm at the start. I always need to get a rhythm before I get to the pace. It just didn’t click for me.

“I just don’t think it was there from the get-go. That was one of those days.”
