Gardai are investigating a series of incidents during which drivers are being targeted by gangs of youths throwing apples.

A number of cars have been damaged and there have also been reports of near misses after vehicles were struck by the apples.

The incidents have happened in the Lifford area in recent days.

Local county councillor Gary Doherty has appealed to those behind the attacks to stop.

He said “This is causing damage to vehicles, causing serious upset, both financially and emotionally to the victims, and potentially could result in a tragic accident.

“I would appeal to those involved to please stop and think about the consequences these actions may have.”

A Garda spokesman confirmed they have received reports of such incidents and have launched an investigation into the attacks.

The spokesman said “The people carrying out these incidents may think it’s a bit of fun or a prank but it’s far from that.

“The consequences behind these incidents could be very serious. We have received reports that there have already been a number of close calls.

“We are investigating these reports and we would appeal for anybody with any information to come forward.”

Local man Ryan Connolly told how his car was struck with apples outside a school in Lifford and almost caused an accident.
