The Ivy Bridge at Cloghan is expected to be reopened in late December following short-term repairs, but a complete rebuild is still needed, according to county councillor Patrick McGowan.
A lack of maintenance was blamed for the collapse of the side wall of the bridge last week. The local road remains closed as the structure awaits repairs.
The local authority in Stranorlar has said that the bridge requires a detailed survey on Monday (1st October) once vegetation has been removed.
Following the inspection, it is intended that a contractor will be appointed to carry out the repair works to the wing wall and parapet.
Cathaoirleach of Stranorlar MD Patrick McGowan, who has made repeated calls for full repair works on the Ivy Bridge, said that long-term plans are being discussed.
“Costings and the availability of funding etc will have a big bearing on when a much needed compleat overhaul of the bridge can be done,” said Cllr McGowan.
