Presidential candidate Peter Casey has attempted to make amends for his golfing gaffe after claiming he fished the ball out of Lough Foyle.
Casey, who has a house on the shores of Lough Foyle in Inishowen, came under criticism when he posted a video to Twitter at the weekend.
In the video, Casey drove a golf ball into the Foyle with the caption “This is the only ‘driver’ I’ll be bringing to the Áras when I get elected.”
The act sparked outrage from environmentally-conscious Twitter users who hit out at Casey for polluting the water with plastic.
The following Sunday morning, Casey responded to the backlash with the claim that he dove into Lough Foyle and retrieved the golf ball.
“Let it not be said that I do not listen to the voters’ concerns,” Casey said.
“This morning I plunged into Lough Foyle and retrieved the golf ball. It was frigid, but it was a nice way to quickly wake up.”
Casey shared a photo of a dirty ball to back up his claim:
