Diarmuid O’Brien insists the passing of time hasn’t dimmed the interest or appetite for the Oscar Traynor Trophy in the Inishowen League.
The Inishowen men have been perennial contenders over the last decade and this season’s bid opens with an away derby against the Donegal League at Ballyare on Saturday evening.
“We have a hardcore of experienced players,” O’Brien said.
“We’re backboned by players who have been there for the last five or six years. We need to get a result of some sort of advantage in a three-team group. We’ll need to be at our best.”
The likes of Kevin O’Loughlin (Buncrana), Darren McMonagle, Darren Gallagher, Dermot Doherty and Thomas McMackin (Aileach), Aiden McLaughlin from Redcastle, Carndonagh’s Ryan Kelly and Shaun Doherty are among the new faces this year with the likes of Nigel McMonagle, Tommy McMonagle, Brendan McLaughlin and Anthony Doherty out of contention.
O’Brien said: “We took a different approach and contacted around 40 players. We casted the net wide. We had a trial game and played a cross-border game against the Saturday Morning League. It has been fairly satisfying.”
