Gaoth Dobhair keeping their fingers crossed on Kieran Gillespie after latest injury blow

BARELY FIVE SECONDS had been played in this afternoon’s Ulster Club SFC quarter-final when Kieran Gillespie went down with a knee injury.

Gaoth Dobhair were taking on Erin’s Own in Belfast having won the Donegal SFC, where the likes of Gillespie helped them to a first title in 12 years.

Owing to two operations to correct hip injuries, Gillespie played no football for Donegal in 2018 but his form had been excellent for his club, who ran out 3-11 to 1-13 winners today.

Gillespie was on the ground for almost five minutes and was then stretchered off and replaced by Peter McGee, before being taken away in an ambulance. After the match, Gaoth Dobhair manager Mervyn O’Donnell said it was just too early to confirm the extent of the injury.

“We don’t know,” O’Donnell said. “He went in an ambulance and will need a scan or a physio. The knee-cap seems to have have gone to one side and might’ve popped back in again but it could be ligament damage.”

Gaoth Dobhair now take on Crossmaglen Rangers from Armagh in the Ulster semi-final in two weeks time and O’Donnell will also be hopeful that Odhran MacNiallais and Odhran McFadden-Ferry will be available having missed out today through injury.

“Odhran McFadden-Ferry picked up a dead leg in the county final against Naomh Conaill two weeks ago,” O’Donnell added. “He’s to about 50 per cent mobility having saw it swell up but we’ll see and Odhran MacNiallais has a hamstring injury so we will see how he fares.”
