Listen: Aoife McColgan on LyIT’s Kelly Cup win over UCD

Aoife McColgan and Letterkenny Institute of Technology’s ladies are on the crest of a wave at the moment.

Having already sealed place in the Premier League semi-finals, LyIT defeated UCD 2-1 in the Kelly Cup yesterday, when goals by Zoe Green and Nicole Gordon sealed a fine win for Johnny Baird’s team.

Ladies soccer only returned to the Port Road campus last year, but they won promotion in the first term and have taken this season in their stride.

“It’s been going well…we’ve only lost one of our last 14 games,” McColgan pointed out.

“We were thinking coming up to the Premier that we’d hold tight, but we’re doing well.”

With LyIT leading 2-1, McColgan stepped up with a big moment in the game, when she saved from Meghan Riordan, who stormed into her penalty area.

McColgan said: “You just have to come out, make yourself as big as possible and if you get hit, you get hit; you take it on the chin and move on.”
