The family of hero cop Michael Devlin joined hundreds of mourners packed into St Mary’s Church in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan on Saturday morning to pay their last respects to local father-of-two Stephen Marron.

Garda officer Michael Devlin, 31, from Donegal, was dragged for 500m by the runaway silver car as the driver tried to escape chasing officers in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, at 11.20pm on Tuesday night.

Devlin couldn’t attend the funeral due to the significance of his injuries.

Stephen Marron, 47, died after an Audi A6 crashed into his blue Skoda Octavia as he waited to finish his shift for a takeaway restaurant.

His wife Helen, their children, his parents and sisters led mourners to St Mary’s Church, which holds 600 people and was filled to capacity.

Symbols representing Stephen’s life were brought to the top of the church.

His daughter Andrea, 9, brought up two family photographs and his son Franco, 6, brought up a plaque which was a Christmas present from them to be given to their dad for Christmas.

A man’s been charged with dangerous driving causing death following the crash that claimed his life and injured a Garda officer on Tuesday night.
