Martin Harley got 2019 off to a winning start at Newcastle this afternoon.

Harley ended 2018 with 87 winners to his name – the second best of his career, with his 103 winners in 2013 still out in front – and he was underway in style today.

The Trentagh man coasted to victory in the Betway Casino Maiden Stakes on Cloudlam.

The William Haggas-trained four-year-old took command early on and, over one mile and two furlongs, had four-and-a-half lengths to spare on 7/4 favourite Sajanjl, with Jack Mitchell in the saddle.

Harley was third aboard both the 7/2 Come On Tier and 5/4 favourite Kentucky Kingdom in his other two races today.
