Alert raised after Donegal residents targeted by phone scam

An alert has been raised this week over scam callers targetting phone customers in Donegal.

The unsolicited calls are purporting to come from telecoms companies to warn phone users that their ‘internet is compromised’.

The scam callers claim that there is a fault with the homeowner’s connection and offer solutions to fix it, often seeking bank details or computer access.

This type of phishing scam has been in circulation for a number of years. However, the alert was raised locally after a customer in south west Donegal contacted Donegal Daily to report that they had been targetted.

The eir support website states that eir will never require access to a customer’s computer or credit/debit card details in relation to a fault/repair.

The safety notice said: “Some customers have reported receiving fraudulent calls from individuals claiming to be a representative of eir calling in relation to an issue/compromise of their broadband service.

“The caller may state that in order to fix the issue they need access to your PC/Laptop/device. The caller may put pressure on you to provide credit card details in order to repair or upgrade the security of the device.

“If you have received a phone call such as this and are concerned about your security, contact your bank immediately for information on what do next.”
