Winter returning to Donegal with sleet and snow on the way

Wintry showers have been forecast for the hills of Donegal as temperatures drop over the next few days.

Snow, sleet and frost are all in the weather outlook for the northwest, according to Met Eireann.

A ‘wintry flurry’ is set to bring temperatures below freezing each night from today (Wednesday) into next week. A chilly night of -2C is in store tonight with a risk of frost and icy stretches.

Showers have the potential to fall as snow under such cold conditions, said forecasters.

Met Eireann said: “Today will be cold with a mix of sunshine and showers. The showers most frequent over the western half of the country at first but will become widespread through the course of the afternoon and evening. Some of the showers heavy at times, with the risk of hail and thunder and turning wintry on hills.”

Forecasters are warning of ‘an isolated wintry shower in the north’ this Wednesday night.

Thursday is set to be another cold day with a good deal of sunshine. The night will turn cold again with further snowfall.

“Temperatures will be below freezing in places and the rain will be preceded for a time by a fall of snow as it spreads eastwards across the country,” said Met Eireann.

The cold spell is set to continue into the weekend and throughout the early days of next week.
