Donegal to get second Garda Armed Response Unit

Donegal is to get a new Garda Armed Response Unit.

The county is currently served by a unit based out of Ballyshannon and backed up by another unit in Dundalk in the event that the Donegal unit cannot make an emergency.

Most recently the elite squad was called to a situation in the Kilygordon are when young mother Jasmine McMonagle was killed.

The issue of the lack of cover and response times were raised at the recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee held at County House in Lifford.

Community activist Joe Boland raised the issue and said there were public concerns about having sufficient response times and resources in the case of a situation when an armed Garda response was needed.

Garda Superintendent Michael Finan told the meeting that a second such unit was now being set up in Donegal.

He also revealed how recruits were now being sought for training from within An Garda Siochana in Donegal to be part of such a unit.

No other details were given due to operational reasons.

Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee, Cllr, Gerry McMonagle welcomed the plan for a second armed response unit.
