Brave business savvy 5th class pupils of Woodlands N.S. stepped into the Dragon’s Den at Loreto Letterkenny this week for a thrilling and entertaining competition.

This successful collaboration between primary and post-primary schools was largely made possible by Loreto Business Studies teachers, Miss Mairead Boyle and Miss Noreen McGlynn. Two transition year students also played a vital organising role. Such great business opportunities are made available to young students thanks to Bank of Ireland sponsorship.

Loreto Letterkenny/ Woodlands NS Dragons Den event, Thursday 24th January 2019

On Thursday last, nine groups of talented primary school students presented and pitched their product ideas to three Loreto pupils who acted as Dragons.

The goal of the primary school students was to leave the Den with the best offer they could possibly obtain from the Dragons.

The very adept young students did not disappoint with their fantastic, innovative ideas. Along the ideas was clothing with technology that notified someone with diabetes if their blood sugars were low, from a group called Hypo-Vibo.

The Clush Covers team created an accessory for football boots that would prevent dirt building up on the bottom of the shoes. This is only a small sample of the ingenious ideas that were included in this event.

Each group impressed with prodigious business ideas and their presenting, negotiating and bargaining talents.

Each and every group wowed not only the Dragons but everyone in attendance.

2nd Year Business students were granted the chance to observe this event and received great inspiration for their own business ideas. The pupils marvelled at the bright young business minds Woodlands has to offer.

This event also helped the Woodlands pupils gain confidence and experience in public speaking and gave them an exciting, interactive introduction to the business world.

After all projects had been presented, the Dragons faced the tough task of choosing winners.

Eventually the Dragons reached a decision but it was noted that all nine groups who had participated did an outstanding job that they should all take much pride in.

A prize was given for best boy and best girl presenter. The two winners stood out to the dragons and immensely impressed them.

The best product idea was given to MykroBands. This product had an accessory that you attached to an item such as your phone or keys. If lost, an accompanying app would help you locate the missing item. This idea impressed the Dragons greatly and was a well deserving winner.

The event was described as a very successful and beneficial initiative to all who attended.

Woodlands students got the great opportunity to pitch their business ideas and all at Loreto were enlightened and inspired by the wonderful, bright minds of the Woodlands pupils.

This event enabled Loreto Letterkenny and Woodlands N.S. to collaborate together and inspire each other, it allowed both parties to see the wonderful work that goes on in their schools and give great opportunities for their students to learn in a fun, collaborative way.

It was evident that the event was largely enjoyed by all and will hopefully promote and encourage more partnership and collaboration between local schools in the future.
